What makes a good great photog? Does composition matter most? or is capturing the moment?

To accomplish all of these, you’ve got to have the gear. One way or another. So I’m now in the market. I’m about to do some research and make a purchase in the coming months, any suggestions? Nikon vs. Canon? Video vs. DSLR? Mirror-less?
